All-promising Reports: LG Unveil 4.0G Android Tablet PC

The tablet wars are heating up at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. T-Mobile USA and LG Mobile Phones just announced that they will team up to offer the first 4G tablet to run on Google’s Android 3.0 Honeycomb operating system.
The new tablet, called the T-Mobile G-Slate with Google, comes only hours after AT&T announced that it plans to partner with Motorola to offer its own tablet.
Carriers are aggressively pursuing the tablet market as they seek to grow revenue through data services. The flurry of tablet activity could pose a challenge to Apple Inc.’s iPad, which has had the tablet market to itself for most of 2010.
The tablet will run on T-Mobile’s HSPA plus network, which the carrier says offers fourth-generation wireless speeds. But other than that, the company is keeping quiet on the specifics. T-Mobile did not give a date for when it would start selling the new tablet, but said it will come out in the coming months. The company also did not release pricing or the size of the tablet.
The move is LG’s first foray into the tablet space. Jeff Hwang, president of LG Mobile Phones, said the company is “thrilled” to finally be launching a tablet.
The partnership with Google helps cement the company’s position within the tablet market. Until now, Android has primarily been a player in the smartphone space.
“The T-Mobile G-Slate with Google will build on our rich history of Android innovation and leadership and deliver deep integration with Google services,” said Cole Brodman, chief marketing officer, T-Mobile USA.
In November, Samsung Electronics Co. started selling the Galaxy Tab, an Android-based tablet, through all four US wireless carriers.
But the Galaxy Tab was criticized for rushing to market using an operating system that was not fully optimized for tablets. That means that many applications don’t fill out the full 7-inch screen and the user interface for the Internet looks more like a mobile phone than being uniquely optimized for the bigger screen size.
